When is 4GB of RAM only 3GB of RAM

The webserver I have has a Gigabyte DS4 motherboard and today, I installed an extra 2GB of RAM, bringing total RAM on the server to 4GB. Unfortunately, on rebooting, the BIOS screen showed only 3GB of RAM installed. [Continued: Gigabyte GA965PDS4 with 3GB or 4GB RAM Memory Hole]
