One of the neat features on my new Nokia E71 is a built-in barcode reader. These read in two dimensional barcodes such as the one below and translates it into data. The barcode below encodes the URL for this webpage.

These are useful since snippets of information, such as URLs and phone numbers, which would normally be labouriously typed into a mobile phone can be easily scanned in.
2D barcodes have been around for a while in Japan where mobile usage is high and pervasive, but 2D barcodes are becoming more commonplace now in the UK.
There are various types of 2D barcodes and the nokia scanner can read both datamatrix and QR codes (which supports Kanji).
Since I have this new toy, I've decided to put a barcode for each page on my URL so that it can be easily scanned in. At the moment, this uses Nokia's service but I'm hoping to try out a free PHP implementation so that this feature can be supported natively.
