Digital Consumption

The webserver I have has a Gigabyte DS4 motherboard and today, I installed an extra 2GB of RAM, bringing total RAM on the server to 4GB. Unfortunately, on rebooting, the BIOS screen showed only 3GB of RAM installed.

Only being able to use 3GB isn't entirely unexpected as some of the addressable space is used by PCI devices etc. However, it was slightly strange that the BIOS didn't recognise the full amount of installed RAM.

I was hoping to remap the additional 1GB of RAM above the 4GB 'memory hole' but I couldn't find a setting for this in the latest version of the BIOS (revision F8). In fact, the BIOS didn't even acknowledge that more than 3GB of RAM was installed.

I'm in contact with Gigabyte now who have suggested that a setting exists but I've been unable to get to it so far.

For those who are wondering, apparently, you need to press CTRL-F1 when in the BIOS to enable some additional settings. But I haven't yet located the memory remap function.

This extended BIOS 'feature' doesn't appear to be documented in the manual or on the on-screen instructions.

Heard back from Gigabyte support who said that there was no memory remap support in the BIOS for this motherboard.

Somewhat annoying since the board is advertised as supporting 8GB and I bought it on that basis.
